How we got here
Overview
PACT’s research and approach builds on previous work carried out by University of Leeds researchers and others looking at resource efficiency and the demand side changes needed to transition to a secure and affordable, zero-carbon society. Two strands of research ‘Demand led pathways’ and ‘Resource efficient futures’ have generated significant interest and impact, informing UK government analysis and contributing to a robust and comprehensive evidence base for PACT’s three current research themes.
Demand-led Pathways
Overview:
Our research has identified practical pathways for achieving the UK’s climate goals by placing people and society at the heart of the transition. Through the Centre for Research into Energy Demand Solutions (CREDS), we brought together an interdisciplinary team that demonstrated how the UK could reduce energy demand by 50% by 2050 while enhancing quality of life. This innovative approach was subsequently adopted by the Government Office for Science, which worked with government departments to develop further net zero pathways and inform its Net Zero Society report.

Resource Efficient Futures
Overview:
Our research has helped shape UK Government policy by highlighting the emissions reduction potential of using fewer materials, improving production processes, and encouraging more sustainable consumption patterns for the most resource intensive activities. This work has become a cornerstone of government analysis on resource efficiency and decarbonisation.
